Pontoon Pro Series

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the game of Pontoon, allow us to enlighten you on it a little. It is commonly known as a variation of the popular Blackjack game, although it often uses the terms of ‘Twist’ and ‘Stick’, rather than the regularly seen ‘Hit’ and ‘Stand’. It’s often referred to as the British or domestic version of Blackjack, which in turn is the American version of Vingt-et-un, the French game of 21 popular in the court of Louis XV. It would go on to become the most popular game of the armed forces of English-speaking nations during the 20th century, and unlike Blackjack, it has no official rules, varying to vast degrees from school to school. Of course, the NetEnt offering of this game does have its own specific rules, although the layout of the table and everything alongside it is very much the same as NetEnt’s blackjack offering. Of course, the idea of Pontoon is to reach the card value of 21 without exceeding it, otherwise this is considered a ‘bust’ and therefore losing hand.

How It All Looks

As just noted, the interface of this game is very similar to the blackjack layout, so if you’d played this, you’ll no doubt be able to recognise the Pontoon screen as being very familiar. Across the top of the screen you’ll see a stack of cards on the right, which are the remaining cards to be dealt. Moving along there’s the dealer’s chips, followed by the display of the minimum and maximum pay outs, which in this game are €1 and €40, respectively. This is then completed by a stack of cards which have already been played. Further down, you’ll see three playing card-shaped boxes, which is where you’ll place your wagers, and the bottom of the table will be in clear view below this.

As far as wagering goes, you’re able to stick with the same bet on every hand dealt, or you can adjust this before the start of each deal. This is done by utilising the three coloured chips in the bottom right hand corner of the screen – a blue €1, a red €5 and a yellow €10. Of course, these can be stacked up on a wager box to reach up to the maximum level of €40, if you should so desire to do so. There is also a grey chip on display here with a red ‘x’ in the centre. This will cancel off any bets already placed in a box. Once you’ve decided on the amount you’d like to wager, you simply need to go ahead and start playing the round.

How to Play Pontoon Professional Series

If you’ve played blackjack before, you’ll find the idea behind this game very similar as it’s basically only a variation on it. You must first place a wager on one, two or three of the boxes available, which will determine how many hands you’ll be dealt for that round. Once you have done so, you need to click the green ‘Deal’ button at the bottom of the table. Depending upon how many boxes you have placed wagers on, you’ll see two cards dealt above each one, face up. The dealer will then provide himself with two cards face down. He will then check to see if he already has pontoon, formed by a picture card and an Ace. If this occurs, the dealer wins automatically.

If the dealer does not have pontoon, play will continue, and this is where you will need to make decisions on all of the hands dealt to you. The idea, as noted, is to achieve an exact amount or as close to the total of 21 from your cards. Should you require more cards to be dealt into a hand, you’ll need to select the ‘Twist’ option. Alternatively, if you believe you’re close enough to the target, you can ‘Stick’. You need to do this for each of the hands you have placed a bet on. You’ll also be given the option of splitting a hand if you have two of the same value cards dealt to you. This will then allow you to separate them and start two new wager hands. Furthermore, if you think you have a specifically great hand, you can double your wager on it by using the ‘Buy’ button, which will then provide you with an extra card for that hand.

There are a couple of rules included in this game, which state that the dealer must twist on a total amount of 16 or soft 17. Pay outs come in the form of 2 to 1 for achieving a pontoon, that being a picture card and an Ace, as well as getting a 5 card trick, which is amassing the total of 21 from five cards. If you simply win by standard methods of beating the dealer’s hand, or by the dealer going bust, you receive a pay out of 1 to 1.

To Summarise

Pontoon is one of our favourite variations on the blackjack game, simply because it’s one of the easiest to become accustomed to playing. It’s all graphically very pleasing to look at as well, and gamers will find themselves compelled by the incorporated piano music in the background, which provides the atmosphere of an actual land-based casino.
